The importance of preventive brain care

The importance of preventive care is to maintain good health throughout your lifetime and improve your quality of life.

In many cases, people don’t think twice visiting their doctors when they feel sick. However, many don’t realize that prevention is the best cure. It is easier to prevent sickness than treating it. It is also significantly cheaper.

In our culture, we all know that brushing your teeth is a necessary routine. It is preventive dental care. Not only does daily brushing your teeth helps to maintain your general and dental health, but it also prevents more complicated dental problems from developing. We all know that a visit to the dentist can be expensive and can cost several thousand dollars, not to mention the discomfort associated with dental issues and loss of productivity due to visits to the dentists.

However, regular brushing will not completely remove the risk of dental problems but greatly reduces your chances of developing dental problems and gum disease.

This example of brushing your teeth as preventive care applies to other measures to avoid health issues. Regular exercise benefits your whole body and your whole health. Among many others, the core benefits of regular exercising is the prevention of coronary heart diseases, Type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and stroke.  Doctors advise that exercise is the best preventive drug. Most people follow this advice and exercise regularly.

But how about preventive brain care? What do we do to prevent our brain from falling prey to the enormous challenges it is facing on a daily base. These challenges come from bad nutritional habits, lack of exercise (or abundance of excuses for not exercising), continuous sleep deprivation, and environmental factors causing mental and oxidative stress damage.

We live in a competitive environment. You are always competing, either for a promotion, the fastest lane on the highway, the best seat on an airplane, the attention of a beloved person, or customer interest in a product. Bad nutritional habits, including the excessive consumption of carbohydrates and sugar, in general, are directly linked to the development of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease and other link brain disease.

Current research also shows evidence for a direct link between stress-induced continuous sleep deprivation and bad quality of sleep, and cognitive decline, memory loss, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Sleep is vital for proper processing and storing long-term memory.

Environmental toxins, such as pollutant but also stress, generate oxidative and nitrosative stress (not all “nitrous” is good for brain health) are neuron killers and induce cognitive decline through neurodegeneration.

We can manage but not completely prevent stress, malnutrition, and environmental toxins but at the same time need to maintain a healthy brain for the years ahead. A healthy brain is essential for the creation and execution of concepts to effectively compete and succeed. Success is the combination of the efficient implementation of a mental idea and a healthy dose of luck.

Unlike exercise and tooth brushing, there is no preventive care designed specifically for our brain. Why does the brain need a specific preventive care program, you might ask.

The brain is a special organ and has its own very specific requirements. The functional units of our brain, the neurons, are responsible for all brain functions and irreplaceable. These cells are also much more sensitive than other cells in our body and are damaged severely beyond repair and easily killed. Damage and degeneration of neurons results in brain degeneration and loss of brain functions.

The prevention of neuronal cells and associated loss of cognitive capacity requires preventive brain care through effective shielding of these cells from environmental toxins, nourishment support to fill in the gaps left by bad dietary habits and providing of building blocks through micronutrients to regenerate and repair these cells and replenish brains resources.
